3. Manage products

To get to the products in the store admin, go to the root menu and Catalog, and then on to Manage products.

Catalog> Manage products

To create a new product, choose Add Product in the upper right corner.

Then you are presented with a choice of product: Simple product, Grouped product, Configurable product, Virtual Product, Bundle Product or Downloadable product.

Single product: Is the simplest product type in Magento. The product includes no choices and is generally a One Size Fits All-product.

Configurable product: Makes it possible for a customer to choose between different types. This can be attributes such as size or color. A configurable product is constructed out of simple products which are the configurable product's individual choice. If a shirt is available in four sizes, the configurable product consists of four simple products where each simple product is one of the sizes.

Grouped Products: Enables to create a new product by making use of one or more of the existing products in the store. An example is if you have a tennis racket and a tennis ball and then want to sell them together as tennis racket + ball.

Bundles: Makes it possible to sell products as a kit. This product connects several products where customers have to choose between several configurable options. This product is a bit more advanced than the others and is not used that often.

3.1 Create a simple product

After clicking Add Product in the upper right corner you will get a choice of what kind of product you want to create. Choose the type you want to create, in this case a simple product.

First, go to the tab General where information like name, description, item number, weight, and visibility is set. All fields marked with a red star are required.

Name: The name you want the product to be called. Choose a unique and good name without making it too long.

”WYSIWYG Editor”: When entering Description and Short Description it is important to use the editor in order for the text to be presented in the shop exactly as you type it in, for example with formatting such as bold text, different sections, etc.

In addition to plain text formatting, you can use the toolbar of the editor, not unlike in Microsoft Word, for example, to insert images or link text. After you have entered your text and clicked on the Submit button, the text may look strange. This is just formatting code; you just need to click the Editor button to see the text normally (WYSIWYG stands for What You See Is What You Get).

Description: A detailed description of the product.

Short Description: A selling recap of the long description.

Enter an Item number: Enter an item number for the product in lowercase letters, no spaces and without å, ä or ö. There is also an advantage in creating a system so that one can easily recognize the product based on its item number, for example by giving them prefix.

Weight: If you have any possibility in a practical sense, we recommend that you take your time and include weight when you add your products so that shipping can be calculated automatically by eg the Post table.

If a product weighs 6 hectograms, type 0.6 in the field. The field is mandatory but may be specified as 0 if you do not plan to use the shipping calculation.

Status: Active or Inactive. Active if it should appear in webshop, if not select Inactive.

URL: If you do not enter anything here, a url will automatically be created using the product name and number. It is important here to know that the url must be unique and without å, ä or ö. You should use hyphens to separate words if there is more than one word.

Visibility: Catalog, Search means that the product will appear in both the catalog i.e. when navigating through the categories in the menu and when using the search function.

These two can also be selected separately and then exclude the other. Not Visible Individually (often used for simple products that will be connected to a configurable product) is to create variations of a product, which with a visible flagship product is a configurable product.

Created_at: Date the product was created in this format: 2015-03-31.

You now come to Prices, where prices are set. The only required fields here are the price and tax class.

Price: Price including tax.

Special Price and From Date -To Date: If you want a product campaign during the month of April, enter the lower price here and set the time the offer shall begin and end.

Tax Class: Set the tax class that applies. The most common is 25%, but some items need a different tax class.

The next tab is Images. Click on the orange button Browse Files ... to upload the desired images from your computer. Once you have downloaded these, you need to click Upload files to upload your downloaded images.

The next step is to sort the images in sort order, where you first choose an image that should be placed first, etcetera. You then tick the fields for how you want the picture to be controlled.

You can then choose which image are the Base Image, Small Image and Thumbnail. By clicking exclude, you can also exclude a photo from appearing on the page, but it will still show on the product in admin mode. If you un-tick Remove and save, the image will be deleted from the product.

The next tab is Inventory.

Manage stock: If you select Yes, the storage will count down when you sell a product and it will be displayed as Out of stock in the store when inventory number reaches 0. If you select No, all options except the minimum and maximum quantity allowed in cart will disappear. Please note that you must click the Use configuration settings to change some of the fields, including the just mentioned Manage stock.

Quantity: If you want the admin to manage your inventory, you need only change Quantity and Status to the product number you have in stock and In stock.

Stock availability: If the product is available, select Yes here. If you have a number in stock but you have chosen Out of stock, the product will not appear in the store, or there will be a notification of the product being out of stock.

Now Categories.

Here, you simply select which categories the product will be included in through to ticking them in the little gray box to the left of the category name.

To expand a category and see the subcategories, click on the little blue box at the side of the yellow folder with a plus sign, if there are subcategories. Click on it and the subcategories will appear.

Then click Save in the upper right corner and the simple product is ready.

3.2 Create a configurable product

It's important to know before you begin to create a configurable product if the attributes you want to use exist. If not, then firstly read about attributes in this manual and create the desired attributes.

Once you have done this, move on to Catalog> Manage Products (like when you create a simple product) and then click Add Product to the far right on the orange button.

Choose Configurable product in the drop down menu. You will then see a view just like shown below where you need to choose which attributes the configurable product should have.

Here you select the attributes most suitable for the product you are creating. For example, Color and Size Clothes if you are creating a sweater. Then press Continue.

You first end up in the General tab where information like name, description, item number, weight, and visibility is set. All fields marked with a red star are required.

Name: The name you want the product to be called. Choose a unique and good name without making it too long.

”WYSIWYG Editor”: When filling in Description and Short description it is important to use the editor in order for the text to be presented in the shop exactly as you type it, ie with formatting such as bold text, different sections, etc. In addition to plain text formatting, you can use the toolbar of the editor, not unlike Microsoft Word, to for example insert images or link text.
